Can a PMOD BT2 capture bluetooth packets?


Hello, i just bought a PmodBt2 ( https://reference.digilentinc.com/reference/pmod/pmodbt2/reference-manual?redirect=1 ) the RN42.

What i want to do is to use a Zedboard with PmodBT2 to capture all bluetooth packets that are being transmitted nearby and then analyze them using the PL and PS, so far I've managed to make the model in vivado ( thanks to some help from this forum ) but I'm unable to tell is this project is going to work from now on because I can't find a way to configure the module in this manner based on the documentation and reference manuals (  http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/50002328A.pdf?_ga=2.199211311.1236631585.1616840276-2126361193.1614764946 and https://cdn.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Wireless/Bluetooth/bluetooth_cr_UG-v1.0r.pdf?_ga=2.133085454.1236631585.1616840276-2126361193.1614764946 )

Hi @OddPants,

The answer is maybe, but probably not.

The reason for this is that the RN42 would have to operate as a bluetooth "sniffer" (looks like a default disabled option in the Roving Networks User Guide with a note to contact Roving Networks on the nuances of Sniff mode) and/or all of the surrounding connections would need to be in broadcast mode (not seemingly supported in the RN42), which is not so likely with the way the Bluetooth protocol is set up to do point-to-point connections.

I suppose it's possible to set up an SDR application to do this (example 1, example 2), but based on what I can tell, this methodology is technically an exploit of the hardware and software that could be used to hack into wireless devices.
