Programming XC3S50AN internal flash

Fred Maddage

Question

I purchased a HS2 JTAG programmer to replace a Xilinx programmer whose software is not going to be updated to  support the XC3S50AN on Windows 10.  This FPGA reads its program from internal flash memory on power up and starts running it.  When I use the HS2 to program it using the software I downloaded here

https://store.digilentinc.com/digilent-adept-2-download-only/

it appears to load the BIT file into the FPGA, but it does not appear to be able to program the BIT file into internal flash memory like Impact does.

How do I program FPGA's internal flash memory?

Hi @Fred Maddage,

I apologize for the delay. I don't believe Digilent's Adept will be able to program the on-board flash of that particular Spartan 3AN chip.

However, as pointed out to me by @zygot, you still may be able to get the October 2013 release version of ISE 14.7, https://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.html/content/xilinx/en/downloadNav/vivado-design-tools/archive-ise.html, (which does work with Spartan 3's) working on Windows 10 as per AR# 62380. As noted in the Xilinx Answer Record, ISE is not officially supported on Windows 10, but the work-around should hopefully let you still use your known working Xilinx programmer (via iMPACT) with the Spartan 3AN that you have.

Thanks,
JColvin
