How PmodENC work?

tranminhhaifet

Question

Hello,

I am confused about how  Rotary Encoder ( PmodENC ) work?

As PmodENC Reference Manual from Digilent, what is "the integral push button of the shaft"?

There are two integral push (quadrature), and two integral push can connect to two internal buttons simultaneously? Then both A and B go low?

Someone can help me?

Thanks!

Hello,

When turning, the PmodENC will generate two quadrature square signals. The two "buttons" will be pressed sequentially, not at the same time.

You can see in the above image that you will have two identical signals but with different phases. That difference will provide you with information regarding the rotation's direction.

I believe this video might help you understand the principle better.

Hi tranminhhaifet,

In addition to what Sergiu said, the "integral push button of the shaft" means that the metal shaft that you can rotate back and forth is also a button. That is, you can physically push it downward to produce a logic high signal on Pin 3 on the Pmod header.

Thanks,
