PC spec for Vivado

edba

Question

Hi

I recently purchased a Basys3 FPGA trainer board to learn FPGAs. My first problem is my laptop has Windows 8.1 and I believe Vivado requires either Windows 7 or Windows 10. I was thinking of buying a cheap Desktop PC bundle with Windows 10 installed. Does anyone have any advice or minimum spec to run Vivado?

Just try. You can download the WebEdition even without buying any board.

The most recent Vivado 2018.2 does work on Windows 8.1: I reverted my own machine from Windows 10 recently, no regrets so far.

BTW, you won't find much joy on a low-end PC. The compile cycles are too long even on decent hardware.
Single-CPU performance (GHz) and HD performance (SDD) rules.
