  1. Good day everyone! I need help on programming the Nexys 3 using a USB memory stick. Here is what I tried so far: 1. Save a single .bit file to a USB memory stick. I have tried my own .bit files as well as the Digilent's Built-In Self Test. I have also tried two USB flash drives. 2. Connect two jumpers on the mode switches. I have also tried none and mode 0 only. 3. I then attached the USB flash drive to the Nexys 3 and press the reset button. But unfortunately the bit file does not get programmed to the FPGA. The <busy> LED beside the USB port on the Nexys 3 is forever blinking at a slow rate. Does anyone tried configuring the Nexys 3 using a USB flash drive? Thank you. Note: I tried it on another Nexys 3 board but also fails to load the bit file. Regards, Nico C.
  2. Hello everyone I am selling my almost brand-new Xilinx Nexys 3 Trainer Board w/ Spartan 6 FPGA. I've only used it for about 1 week and it is in absolute Mint condition. I am choosing to sell it because my new job at a startup uses Altera's line of products so I will be getting an Altera FPGA Unfortunately I just got my Nexys 3 so I am try to get whatever money I can for it. A link to this product on the Digilent site can be found below: As you can see, it's worth $270 on the website, the total comes to over $300 if you order it from the store. I was hoping I could get around $200 if possible but am definitely open to haggling depending on the demand. Please let me know if you are interested!   6. Hi, We would like to implement bluetooth capabilities on our FPGA (nexys3) board. We want an app on our mobile phone to be able to transmit and receive data to/from the FPGA. We have tried looking for sample codes all over the net but we couldn't find any. Hope that any of you guys have experience working with this pmod module. 1) How should I go about implementing this in verilog? 2) For the app, is there data formatting to be done on the phone application? I'm looking at the default slave mode for this application. To use this mode, do I need to enter command mode, and transmit '$$$' from my mobile application?   7. Hello all, I have a Nexys 3 in which, long story short, 12V found its way to pins B1-B4 via a 200Ohm resistor and now they can't source a high output. The on-board 200Ohm resistors, R9, R11, R13 and R15, all read the correct resistance (Measured in-circuit) but all of the resistors in the D3 package are shorted. I'm hoping that it's just D3 that has been affected and would like to source a replacement. The package just 6H Y on top and the schematic for the board doesn't list the part number - What is the full part number and manufacturer of this part ? Thanks, -Andrew.
  8. I cannot, for the life of me, get this: work. I'm fairly confident I have the clocks at the correct frequencies. And I've tried sending a square wave at about 12kHz ranging from max amplitude: 0111111111111111 to min amplitude: 1000000000000000 (2's compliment). But when I plug in my headphones, I do not hear anything... Does this thing need an amplifier? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  10. Hello sir, I am using Nexys3 board along with digilent adept for bit file download. But in this board there are only 8 switches. I have seen there is possibility to extend I/O ports virtually with the help of digilent adept but how to use this feature. What is the procedure for this? If suppose i want to implement 8 bit adders i need (8+8) 16 input ports. How to achieve this with nexys3 board?

    Nexys3 VGA output

    Hello everyone. I'm currently trying to create simple VGA EDK project to show something on the LCD monitor with Nexys3 board. Nexys3 board has Micron celular RAM and I have a problem that every row is represented by four same rows on the screen. I think that my problem is like problem described on Xilinx Community forum: I've used PLB bus and tried setting Video Memory on base address of Micron RAM and on high addres - 2 MB. I have also tried to set Video Memory to whole Micron RAM (16 MB). Micron RAM was successfully tested with the SDK built in memory test. For software code, I used example from Xilinx (xtftexample.c). I think that problem is with speed of Micron RAM. I found that in asynchronus mode you need to wait 70 ns for data to be ready. This means that frequency of accessing to Micron RAM is about 14.29 MHz and TFT controller works with clock of 25 MHz. Does anyone have example EDK project which uses Micron RAM in synchronous mode? If you need any information about my project, please let me know. I would appreciate any help.

    xst.exe not found

    Hello there, I'm a beginner to FPGA boards. I only learned about them recently and I purchased a Nexys3 along with a Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards (2012) textbook available from this website in order to get familiar with them. I've been following the textbook religiously but I've come into an issue when I attempt to use the Synthesis Tool on Active-HDL Student Edition. I put in the settings to get it running as instructed by the textbook and I get the following error: I've attached as much information in pictures as I can. I have located xst.exe and pointed to its location for the Synthesis Tool but the program seemingly does not acknowledge it. Any ideas?

  16. Hi, I connect the Nexys 3, and when i open the Adept software it doesn't show the PROM option, only the FPGA option which deletes the program every time i power off the Nexys. What should i do for program in the PROM memory? Thanks

    Nexys 3/ PWM

    hello all, I am doing small class project. I would really appreciate if any one can help me with this. we are using SDK and we are trying to control servo which require PWM signal. I don't know how to generate PWM signal to control servo. I know it require two timers to do it. Thanks!!!

I am presently working on NEXYS 3 FPGA board and trying to interface the PMOD TMP2 and PMOD NIC 100, I have completed programming for those modules, but while actually interfacing them I am facing a problem as to 1. HOW AND FROM WHICH PIN CAN I APPLY AN EXTERNAL CLOCK TO THE NEXYS 3 KIT ?? 2. ALSO THE PMOD PINOUTS FROM JA1 TO JD10 ON MY BOARD CANT BE ALLOTED TO THE PMOD TMP2 and PMOD NIC 100 MODULE INPUTS IN XILINX PLAN AHEAD, IF I ASSIGN THEM ON THE SOFTWARE THEN WHILE ACTUALLY CHECKING THE WORKING THERE IS NO OUTPUT..!! I AM USING Xilinx ISE Design Suite 12.4 HOW CAN THIS PROBLEM BE RESOLVED..KINDLY HELP...!!
  20. I got redirected to this forum by the Sales Team, so I hope I'm in the right sub-forum. Currently I'm using a Nexys 3 board and I'm in the need of more Pmod connections. I therefore thought of purchasing a VmodMIB extension board. Both boards, the Nexys 3 and the VmodMIb, can be connected together over a VHDCI connector. Unfortunately the direction (male/female) of these VHDCI connectors is not indicated in the reference manuals. So my questions: Do they have opposite direction so that they can directly be plugged into each others VHDCI connector without need for a cable? If no, which direction (male/female) do the VHDCI connector on these boards have? Thank your for any answer in advance.
  21. Hii.. I am a beginner and presently I am working on NEXYS 3 FPGA board, I am trying to communicate NEXYS 3 with my computer using PMOD NIC 100. My doubt is how and by using which Protocol can I interface my PMOD NIC 100..?? can it be interfaced by RS232 since I have to transmit temperature data only (I am using PMOD TMP2 for that) Is it a proper way to communicate it..??..Or should I use any other protocol..?? Kindly Help...
  22. For a NEXYS3 is there a component you know of that will take either the PMOD outputs or the differential VHDC outputs and logic shift high logic level to above 3.6v. Need to do fast to preserve fidelity of 20nS wide pulse. Thinking 100 MHz min bandwidth for level shift component. Thanks.
  23. I've got the Nexys 3 board and it's reading some data from a peripheral, but I can't debug what's on the board because I'm not about to spend 600+ on chipscope. So I've thought about the possibility of using the UART to send data back to the PC to analyze there, but the problem is there's really just about zilch information out there on how to use the UART on this board. Let's be honest, the Digilent Nexys 3 user guide (pg 12) is absolutely useless in this regard. It explains what the UART does from a high level, and mentions using free FTDI drivers, but has absolutely no information whatsoever on how to actually use this feature. I've tried approaching this at a xilinx angle, searching for "UART cores", which are hard to find, potentially not free, and not simple to actually implement or use. (I managed to acquire a "XPS 16550 UART" license, but can't figure out the first thing about how to use it, since Xilinx loves to massively overcomplicate what should be simple instructions) So I'm abandoning that approach, and now I'm here. Shouldn't there be an easy way to get, this UART up and running?
  24. I recently purchased the PmodMIC to use with my Nexys 3 board and Analog Discovery. Finally after a bit of coding, I seem to have gotten it to run continuously, but I have just a few questions. In the PmodMIC reference component PDF, it states: The VHDL component is an entity named PmodMicRefComp which has five inputs and five outputs.The input ports are a 50MHz clock,.... (BTW, I think the 5 inputs, 5 outputs thing is a typo ). But my first question is: 1) Is it possible to lower the sampling rate? Apparently the 50 MHz input clock gets divided down to 12.5 MHz inside the PmodMICRefComp. I need to record some audio data, but certainly not at 12.5 MHz! I am not sure why any audio source would ever need to be sampled that quickly, but in any case, I attempted to lower the input clock speed down a bit and my design seems to have failed. I am looking to record signals comprised mainly of human speech, so 8KHz is actually about what I need. The 2nd question is: 2) I see no mention anywhere of the format of the data output by the PmodMIC. It's 12 bits in parallel, but is that signed? unsigned? Couldn't seem to find this in the reference PDF anywhere. If this is an SPI standard convention that I'm just not aware of, sorry for asking. The 3nd question is: 3) In the state machine diagram, is there no transition directly from the "SyncData" state to the "ShiftIn" state? My code currently initiates continuous sampling by checking if nCS is HIGH and DONE is low, as indicated in the SyncData state. Then, it brings the START signal low again to return to the IDLE state, and increments a counter to keep track of the number of samples taken. On the next clock cycle, it checks if START is low, and # of samples is > 1, then pull START highagain, repeating the process. What I am wondering is: Instead of pulling START low to return to IDLE, would it not just be possible to keep START high and have nCS get pulled low again? I suppose this would need to be taken care of by the PmodMICRefComp VHDL code since that is the driver for the nCS signal after all. It would be nice if that provided VHDL component had a single bit control signal that allowed for selecting ONE TIME conversion and CONTINUOUS conversion. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
